The travel and tourism industry in the United States generates billions of dollars annually, according to  SelectUSA. Americans travel across a city, across a state or across the country for a variety of reasons. They travel for leisure or business.

Reasons for Traveling

Travelers may travel to one area of the country with a list of specific things they want to do there. A family who lives in a cold climate may travel to Southern California or Florida during the winter to enjoy the warm weather and visit theme parks in the area. Southern California has Disneyland, Universal Studios, SeaWorld and Knotts Berry Farm. Walt Disney World, SeaWorld and Universal Studios are in Florida. Residents of snowy states can also get away from the winter weather by visiting the beaches in Hawaii, Florida or California.
Families in Southern California or Florida who want to see snow during the winter will enjoy a vacation at a ski resort in Colorado or Utah. People who live in a state where the seasons do not change will be amazed at the brilliant colors of New England’s fall foliage.

Business travelers who are traveling so they can  network to help their company grow may want to visit cities where large companies have offices. Chicago, Los Angeles and New York are some of these cities.

Popular Destinations

Some places in the United States attract travelers because they offer a variety of attractions. New York has Central Park, the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building. Great food, historic buildings and the French Quarter are some of the attractions in New Orleans.

Other destinations in the United States may draw visitors for one specific purpose. People interested in the history of the United States will enjoy walking along Boston’s Freedom Trail, wandering through Independence Hall in Philadelphia or visiting Civil War battlefields in Virginia. Sports lovers can visit Chicago to see professional basketball, baseball and football games. Golfers will find plenty of places to play in the Myrtle Beach area in South Carolina. There are casinos in Las Vegas. Shopaholics may find it worth their while to visit Fifth Avenue in New York City, the Magnificent Mile in Chicago or the Mall of America near Minneapolis. A number of small towns have specialty shops and museums.

Seeing Something Different

People may want to visit a region that is quite different from their home. A resident of the desert city of Phoenix may enjoy hiking through the forests in Oregon, seeing the Great Lakes or taking a trip through Florida’s Everglades. The small towns, lakes and vineyards of the Finger Lakes region in upstate New York are a great place for a weekend getaway for a New York City resident. Hiking in the Rocky Mountains or spending a weekend in the Poconos Mountains in Pennsylvania will be an adventure for someone from a flat state in the Midwest. People from a small town will be amazed at New York City’s skyscrapers.
